Recent Reads
I'm still doing most of my posting over at my Typepad page (http://jkrbooks.typepad.com), but I thought I would mention a few recent reads here:

  • New Moon by Stephenie Meyer (young adult). Loved the first book (Twilight). Didn't like this one quite as much, because Edward is missing in action for a big chunk of the book, but I still can't wait for the next book in the series.

  • Kiki Strike by Kirsten Miller (middle grade). I'm still reading this one, but I already want to buy copies for all of the 12-year-old girls I know, and I have tons of pages highlighted for my review.

  • The Two Minute Rule by Robert Crais (adult mystery/suspense). A fun, quick read by an excllent author.

  • The Girl Who Owned a City by O.T. Nelson (middle grade). This had come highly recommended, and I do love dystopian fiction, but I found it a bit disappointing in practice. It was published back in the 70's, and I enjoyed it, but I thought that the author could have done more with the premise.

What are you reading?

hey Jen, great to see you here at LJ. Right now I am finishing up Seducing the Demon by Erica Jong. It is less about writing than I thought it would be, and more about her sex life. hm. But I am going through my pile of books and trying to decide what to take along on vacation. Clay by David Almond? The Book Thief? Stripes of the Sidestep Wolf? I know I won't have time to read them all.

Vacation reading

I have to say that although I loved The Book Thief, I'm not sure that I would consider it good vacation reading. Very large, and not at all upbeat. I haven't read Clay or Stripes of the Sidestep Wolf, so I have no useful input there. All I know is, there are many more great books out there than there is time to read them, that's for sure.

Thanks for commenting!

What's in the pile? :)

The Book Thief RULES. Not light reading, though, so if you want a breezy readzy for your vacation, save it for later when you can fully commit to it. That book commands the reader's full attention.

Is the Twilight series set to be a trilogy? If so, it could be a sophomore slump. Poor trilogies with their sometimes sagging middles.

I read Twilight so early - and now I'll be reading New Moon late. Post-hype.

I have wanted to read Kiki Strike since I first heard about it, months prior to publication. Why oh why don't I own it yet? Why oh why is it not available at the library? Why, Kiki? Why are you so elusive?

Twilight will actually be a longer series than a trilogy, I think. It wasn't really a sophomore slump - more that the plot required Edward be offscreen for a lot of the book, and I really missed him. New Moon actually just came out a couple of weeks ago.

I ended up buying Kiki Strike - I couldn't resist it, after I read about it.

I'm purposely waiting to read New Moon. Make the hype go away.

I am apparently working through themes by way of imprints. There was the MTV run, then Dundurn, now finishing up Flux!

I loved Kiki Strike -- one of my favorite new characters for 2006, actually. My 12-yo loved it, too. My older daughter adored The Girl Who Owned a City (but wished there were a sequel) and is gaga over the Meyer books. She's read Twilight twice, and she's not usually a re-reader. She liked New Moon as well, but had the same comment as you -- she missed Edward.

Duh. Forgot to say what I'm reading. Currently it's The Annotated Hunting of the Snark: The Definitive Edition by Lewis Carroll, edited by Martin Gardner.

Interesting... I haven't run across that one.

I'm currently reading an adult mystery called No Trace, by Barry Maitland, and I'm about to read the fourth Gregor the Overlander book, and Notes from the Midnight Driver by Jordan Sonnenblick. I have all three out from the library - that's how they've risen to the top of the list. I also have a stack of picture books to read and review - hoping to get to some of those this weekend.

Thanks for visiting!

Gregor 4 is a cliffhanger. You are forewarned.

Thanks for the warning! I think that book 5 is out, or out soon, so I'll take my chances... I do love the series.

Thanks for the feedback, Kelly! I'm thinking of re-reading Twilight myself. I think that your daughter and I may be kindred reading spirits. Of course, she might outgrow books for 12-year-olds... I adore Kiki Strike, too. I think that all 12-year-old girls should have the chance to read about her.
